It’s crunch time for Kings Langley as they travel to Winslow United in their playoff semi-final on Wednesday evening.
Steve Heath and his side have battled past numerous injury setbacks and rallied through their fair share of adversity, and their hard work has earned them a shot at promotion.
They’re two games away from a return to Step Four football, but having finished in the final playoff position of fifth, they’re going to have to do it the hard way.
They’ll first have to find a way past Winslow, who have a point to prove after being agonisingly denied the league title by Haringey Borough on goal-difference. Three more goals and they’d have nabbed top-spot, but now they have to summon the energy to go again in the playoffs.
It was a 3-2 defeat in their final game against AFC Welwyn that cost them, meaning a point was enough for Haringey at Cockfosters a couple of days later.
A bitter pill to swallow no doubt, denied the title despite scoring over 100 league goals. But in Harry Scott, they have the only man to outscore Louie Collier - his 36 two better than the Kings forward.
They also got the better of Heath’s men in both regular season meetings, coming from behind to win 3-2 in Winslow last month and 1-0 victors at The Orbital Fasteners’ Stadium in February. Aaron King scored in both of those and he’s been quite the handful for Kings to cope with.
They did at least get their hands on some silverware on Saturday, coming from 2-0 down to beat Eaton Socon 3-2 in the Gladwish Challenge Trophy final. Unsurprisingly, it was Scott who starred, bagging two goals and taking the Man of the Match award.
At one stage it looked like it would be these two teams fighting for the title, before yet more injuries hampered Kings and Haringey emerged from nowhere, putting together a 17-game unbeaten string having been ninth near the end of January.
As it was, Kings were made to fight for their playoff spot. They showed great character in earning fifth position, with that 3-2 loss in Winslow their only defeat in their final nine games, and now know they have the quality to hurt any opponent.
Collier has been unplayable at times this campaign, combining delightfully with the likes of Kieran Turner, Edu Toiny-Pendred and, later, George Hughes and Izzy Hilaire.
With a solid backbone of centre-backs Jamie Ovington and Charlie Johnson, backed up by two fine goalkeepers in Haf Al-Droubi and Charlie Crowley, and Player of the Season Joe Fitzgerald at right-back, they have all the pieces to mount a serious playoff charge.
And your support could be vital. Kick-off at Elmfields Gate on Wednesday is at 7.45pm - the club’s free supporter coach is already full up, but we’d love to see as many of you make the journey as possible.
