AFC Dunstable are the visitors to The Orbital Fasteners Stadium on Saturday, as Jordan Parkes’ men look to return to winning ways for the first time in four games.
With their last victory coming on the road at Stotfold back in October, Kings have had to battle hard in a series of fixtures testing them against the top teams in the league.
Points against Flackwell Heath and Welwyn Garden City will be of great value for Parkes, although he would have been disappointed in surrendering a 1-0 lead against Berkhamsted FC on Tuesday night.
After a dominant first half, he would have expected his side to see out the game in comfort but instead it was the Comrades who stormed into control, stealing all three points with a trio of second half goals.
The referee’s halftime whistle seemed to flip the momentum as Berkhamsted, placed second in the league, switched on the ruthless style they have shown so often so far this year in blowing their visitors away.
That result makes Saturday afternoon increasingly important for Kings, as despite some strong performances with plenty of positives to be taken, a record of one point in their last three games doesn’t make for ideal viewing, with a loss against Aylesbury and a draw at home to Welwyn rounding off their most recent fixtures.
They remain in eighth place but have moved to nine points off the playoff places and in a particularly tight middle segment of the table, they know they have to get back in the winning habit soon.
One of the sides clinging to their tails are Saturday’s visitors, AFC Dunstable. Victory at the weekend could take the Old Dunstablians ahead of their hosts, and they themselves will be keen to right some wrongs exerted by Berkhamsted.
Coincidentally, their last league assignment also finished in a 3-1 defeat at the hands of the Comrades and they have won only once in their last five outings.
Midweek cup action provided some light relief, as they overcame Arlesey Town 4-2, but they are bound to be feeling the pressures of a tight-knit division.
Sat in 12th place, they are just two points behind their hosts and also have a game in hand, so Saturday’s matchup looks like a close battle with plenty to play for as far as league spots are concerned.
Narrowly missing out on promotion after finishing in third place last season, Dunstable will have aspirations at the top end of the table and will be determined to add to their points tally as frequently as possible.
Young gun Sean Duodu currently leads their scoring ranks - the 18 year old bagging five times in 10 league matches - and he is part of an array of talent that Kings will have to work hard to stop.
Littered with youth due to their partnership with the Varsity Nine Academy, their squad comprises great energy and enthusiasm and with a dangerous combination of speed and a relentless desire to run, they’re bound to prove a serious handful for the Kings defence.
However, Parkes’ side will hope to exploit the inexperience among the Dunstable ranks and use their additional knowhow to their benefit.
It’s sure to be an intriguing clash with two sides fighting for similar territory. Get down to The Orbital Fasteners Stadium on Saturday afternoon to support the boys for this Remembrance weekend fixture with tickets available on the door at £10 per adult, £7 per concession and just £2 for U18s.
