When Lance Williams decided to leave Leighton Town at the end of last season, Jordan Parkes moved quickly to remind him of a conversation they had had a few months prior.
‘JP tried to sign me midway through last season before I eventually opted to join Leighton Town.’ says Williams.
‘We had a positive chat about what he was looking to create this season and the sort of character/profile he was looking to bring in. We kept in touch over the summer, and I told him I’d come for a chat during pre-season. I had a few offers closer to home but felt Kings was the right place for me.’
Last season was a difficult one for Williams, having got off to a flyer North Leigh’s well publicised issues proved to be a stumbling block for his progress and now that he feels settled again, he is hoping to pick up a similar vein of form in WD4.
‘As you said, last season couldn’t have got off to a better start. I began the season playing in a deeper midfield role, switched to centre forward and scored 14 or 15 goals in 17 appearances.
‘Having already got off the mark in my first home game of this season (vs Enfield), I’m hoping I can recapture that form and help contribute to winning games of football here.’
Now aged 35, Williams is one of the senior figures in a very young Kings squad and his know-how hasn’t gone unnoticed amongst the younger players. Fellow forward Jake Tibbetts recently spoke of the influence player like Williams can have on his own development, something which Lance is only too aware of himself.
‘First off, thanks Tibbetts. I think it’s massive (to have an influence on younger players). When you first come into men’s football it can often be quite daunting, especially nowadays. So I’m fully aware of my role in the team on/off the pitch and hopefully the younger players see that. There are some really talented boys within the squad & without singling anyone out, I have no doubt a few of them will go on to bigger and better things in the future.’
Having been at the club for a couple of months now, it’s clear that Williams has found his feet and feels at home in a developing squad.
‘I’ve really enjoyed the short time I’ve spent at the club so far. I’ve been really impressed with what I’ve seen overall, and I am looking forward to what we can achieve as a group.’
