KINGS ON THE BALL IN CUP
Kings eased their way into the semi-final of the Herts Senior Cup relatively comfortably against an industrious Ware side who certainly had their moments. There was a place in the starting line-up for youth player Aidan Collins and the 17 year old displayed a precocious energy throughout, but the real star of the show for Kings was recent signing Matt Ball, whose influence was evident throughout.  In fact, it was Ball’s incisive through ball as early as the third minute which set a marauding Calum Adebiyi clear to beat home custodian Harry Voss at the far post. Ware responded well to the early setback and the menacing Yannick Kamanan was only denied by the ‘offside’ flag after deftly converting a penetrating cross from Milner. Kings compounded the host’s heartache just minutes later when, in a role reversal of the opening score, Adebiyi turned provider to set up Matt Ball to increase Kings advantage with a virtual tap in. Kings were in the ascendancy now and were looking to build an unassailable lead. Only a marginal offside decision ruled out a Mitchell Weiss ‘score’ while Matt Ball’s audacious chip was thwarted by the woodwork. As it was, Kings had to be content with a two goal advantage at the break. The hosts started the second period with real intent and Martin Bennett had to react smartly to smother Milner’s fierce cross shot as the hosts fought to reduce the arrears. Kings were quick to riposte and Mitchell Weiss, who was proving to be a regular springboard for King’s attacks, twice set up colleagues only for the opportunities to go begging. The home side remained threatening on the break and from one of these sorties the ever dangerous Kamanan was very unlucky to see his snapshot crash down from the underside of the bar and away to eventual safety. Kings countered with a Jorell Johnson header which was cleared off the line and a fierce Josh Coldicott-Stevens effort which was just wide as Kings looked to close out the game. In the end the coup de grace was delivered in the final minute by fit again striker, Gareth Price and again Ball was the architect, sliding an inch perfect pass through to the former Ware man who rounded the advancing Voss and finished with aplomb. All in all a competent performance by Kings in the County’s premier cup competition but they know they will face a sterner test against the eventual winners of the Hitchin V Borehamwood tie to be played later in the month.
