Match report

No. 31   Tuesday 19th December 2017.     Herts Senior Challenge Cup – Round 2
Kings Langley     3 (Price 20, Turner 70, King 85)   Watford     1 (Bradbury 32)
KING CROWNS CUP DISPLAY
Having put a Hemel Hempstead Town team containing five regulars out of the County Cup in the first round, Kings faced a different challenge against a Watford side predominately comprising their Under 18 squad. Kieran Turner began like a man with a point to prove, as he hit the angle of the bar, forced Jamie Lacy into a routine save and then had a fierce volley blocked by the keeper – all within the first quarter of an hour. Kings deservedly took the lead five minutes later when a Mitchell Weiss through ball gave Gareth Price a one-on-one with Lacy, who will have been disappointed to have helped his shot into the net. The visiting youngsters refused to be overshadowed by their opponent’s confident movement however and equalized just past the half hour mark when a corner was headed on by Ben Tricker and the tall Harvey Bradbury stooped to head home. Chris Gosling, back from a loan spell with Leverstock Green, was staking his claim with a gutsy midfield performance and was the origin of a flowing move with Weiss and Price that was finally thwarted by Lacy’s save.
The second half saw Kings continue in the ascendancy, but three quarters of the tie had elapsed before Jay Karagozlu’s corner and Gareth Price’s blocked shot rebounded to Kieran Turner, lurking on the far post, for him to notch the goal his performance had deserved. Watford’s response was immediate and Tricker was unlucky to see his shot hit the Langley post a minute later, but the pass of the night came from Mitchell Weiss, a diagonal crossfield ball giving Gareth Price the chance for a volley just wide. Kings turned on the style with an interpassing, ball holding display that noticeably frustrated Watford, but it was Michael King, on for Price, who crowned the evening. A defence splitting reverse pass by Turner was run onto by King and his accurate, rising shot across goal bulged the far side netting to seal Kings’ advance to the quarter final, where they will travel to Welwyn Garden City.   RM
