Magic Melvin Inspires Cool Kings

For the second time in the first four days of the new decade, Kings players kept their heads when those around them were losing theirs, questioning the visual ability of the official in an aggressive manner and suffering the inevitable consequences of a reduction of personnel. That aside, this was again a deserved victory, taking the run over the last five games to four wins, three clean sheets, two doubles over opponents and a one place rise up the table. With the debut of ex-Watford striker Will Hoskins and the return of Harry Crawford, the bench had a more experienced look than of late and Chris Cummins fielded an unchanged starting line-up for the third game in succession. The first ten minutes were eventful, Stevie Ward surprised to suddenly finding himself in acres of room and being unceremoniously bundled over by keeper Tony Breeden after a hurried shot was heading wide. Play switched to the other end and a close range shot hit the hand of Jorell Johnson, the referee pointed to the spot and Luke Benbow took the kick. Melvin Minter produced a superb save, but the ball fell back to Benbow, who seemed certain to score, but Minter scrambled to his feet to complete a spectacular double save. The keeper was Kings’ saviour again when David Bremang forced his way through, pulling off another low save, but his opposite number had to be in similar form when Kyle Connolly burst through the defence following a flowing move. A Roddy Collins piledriver was just over as Kings began to exploit gaps in the visiting defence and reaped the reward when an inch perfect through pass from Mitchell Weiss enabled Stevie Ward to run on and coolly slot the ball past Breedon. When Saul Williams found himself in a similar position shortly after, the keeper was this time equal to the task, but the half closed with Borough taking exception to a Roddy Collins challenge and reacting aggressively to both player and referee, resulting in three yellow cards.

With the second half a mere four minutes old, Bremang expressed dissent again and gave the referee no option other than dismissal and Borough were facing an uphill task. Kings pressed home the numeric advantage and a 35 yard Jordan Parkes effort was narrowly over, a superb solo run through the defence by Kyle Connolly was halted almost on the line and Saul Williams hit the bar. Minutes later, Jordan Parkes sent Saul Williams through and the winger beat Breedon with a composed finish equal to that of the first goal. The home side were now dominating, a Lloyd Doyley cross receiving a flick from Will Hoskins that was denied only by a reflex reaction from the keeper and the latter was to have the last word when he emulated his opposite number by saving Jordan Parkes penalty after Nigel Julien had brought down Harry Crawford.
