Match report

No. 57    Saturday 2nd May 2015.     Spartan South Midlands League Challenge Trophy – Final
Kings Langley                 2 (Weiss 36, 77)
St Margaretsbury            2 (Edwards 38, Summers 50)
(Kings Langley win 5-4 on penalties)
Kings Langley completed a superb double, adding the Challenge Trophy (League Cup) to the Premier Division Championship when they beat St Margaretsbury 5-4 on penalties after extra time at London Colney. They were made to fight every inch of the way by a determined Bury side, who put all memories of their heavy defeat at Gaywood Park fourteen days earlier behind them as they went on the offensive from the start. Charlie Edwards put a shot just past the post as Kings struggled to get into any sort of rhythm and for well over half an hour looked to be second best. But apart from the early chance, neither side had tested the keepers and it could be said to be against the run of play when Mitchell Weiss took a lobbed forward pass on the left wing, cut inside, found his passing options limited, and went on to ride two tackles before slotting a low precision shot past Lee Robinson. Bury were stunned, but picked themselves up to hit back within two minutes, as a free kick, conceded wide right, was met with a textbook glancing header from Charlie Edwards for the equalizer. Five minutes into the second half they were ahead as a costly error by Charlie Crowley saw his shanked clearance fall to Mark Summers and the unmarked striker accepted the invitation. Kings’ answer was a double substitution and a change of formation and the introduction of Lewis Toomey at last welded them into a unit capable of demonstrating to the large crowd just why they are champions. An Alex Campana free kick was fisted over, a Dean Hitchcock shot deflected onto the post and a Lewis Toomey shot was inches over. Lee Roberts had a shot well saved by Charlie Crowley, but the pressure at the other end finally paid off after a Luke Ladyman header was tipped over by Robinson. From the resultant corner, the skipper produced an almost identical header through a crowded box and an alert Mitchell Weiss stooped to divert it past the keeper. The drama ramped up a gear when Joss Lillis had the ball in the net for Bury in the third minute of time added on, but the assistant’s offside flag halted their celebrations. Extra time saw the battle continue, Kings possibly just shading the few chances there were, until the penultimate minute of the extended match saw Luke Ladyman guilty of a trip in the box. Up stepped Charlie Edwards, his shot was good, but Charlie Crowley threw himself to his right to block it and then incredibly scrambled to his feet to repeat the act from Lee Roberts’ follow up.
Both teams knew that Kings had ridden their luck and that may have been on the mind of Jack Bartlett, as he spooned Bury’s first penalty over the bar. His team mates, Roberts, Summers, Edwards and Ed Taylor duly converted, although Crowley got a hand to two of them, but Kings’ reply was five perfect penalties from Danny Hutchins, Alex Campana, Lewis Toomey, Dean Hitchcock and finally a cool Connor Toomey, delivering the last kick of a memorable season and ensuring an historic double.
