No. 16 Saturday 4th October 2014. F A Vase – 2nd Qualifying Round
Kings Langley 2 (Adebiyi 51, Campana 82)
Burton Park Wanderers 0
Kings Langley went into the draw for the first round proper with a laboured victory over a hard working United Counties League side, but owed their advancement to a fantastic second half save from keeper Ant Ladyman. A morning downpour had freshened up the pitch, but not the home side, as a strike force of Mitchell Weiss, Daryl Atkins and Alex Campana saw chance after chance missed or foiled by an outstanding Wanderers defence led by skipper Michael Tolton and keeper Domenico Roggero. Weiss did hit the bar with a header, but in truth, Kings shooting was wayward and they were handed a warning when Shane Hawkes was given space in a rare attack, but was edged out by Ant Ladyman. Callum Adebiyi finally got the breakthrough six minutes into the second half when Kings built a move on the left and a Daryl Atkins flick gave the defender a chance to show how it should be done with a shot across the keeper into the far corner. The home team failed to build on this however, and as their frustration grew in tandem with a corner count that had entered double figures, there was the feeling that any slip could take the tie to extra time and penalties. The accident waiting to happen duly arrived in the 67th minute when Warren Plowright, who had delivered an assured performance, played a dire ball across the defence to the feet of Chris Hart, eight yards out with only the keeper to beat. With the word ‘goal’ on everyone’s lips, Ant Ladyman guessed left, made six yards and deflected the ball round the post with his outstretched foot. On such moments are matches decided and when Weiss won the ball for Atkins to see his shot blocked and Campana pick his spot with the rebound, the game was over for the gallant visitors.
