No. 2 Saturday 9th August 2014. Spartan South Midlands League – Premier Division
Colney Heath 1 (Matt Standen 76 pen)
Kings Langley 2 (Hutchins 28, Toomey 61)
An impressive start to life in the Premier League saw Kings limit Colney Heath to a single chance in the first twenty minutes, while they asked the majority of the questions, culminating in a Danny Hutchins volley headed off the line. A mishit Matt Standen shot hit Ant Ladyman’s post and the keeper pulled off a great save from the same player minutes later, but Kings surged back to take the lead when Tom Carter’s crossfield pass was intercepted by Bret O’Connor, but an alert Danny Hutchins robbed him of the ball to deliver an emphatic shot into the corner of the net. Kings ended the half with a Hutchins’ shot well turned by Ricky Parks, who then took the ball off the toes of Alex Campana, but could only watch as Benny Fiadzomor’s powerful lob landed on the roof of the net. The second half opened in the same vein, with a Connor Toomey shot parried and his header just wide after a textbook Hutchins / Hitchcock move. But when the influential Hutchins fed Alex Campana, his inch perfect through ball saw Toomey not to be denied and his right foot shot found the target. With nothing to lose, Heath began to look dangerous for the first time and a Paul Armstrong header had Ant Ladyman scrambling, before Aaron Clarke spooned over a gilt edged chance. But when Clarke was brought down by Luke Ladyman and Matt Standen dispatched the penalty, Kings were then backs to the wall. A timely Jack Pattison tackle avoided further damage, before a superb scything Lee Burgoyne solo run that saw him finish just wide relieved the pressure and the final whistle signified a dream start..
