No. 30 Tuesday 21st January 2014. Spartan South Midlands League – Division 1
Kings Langley 5 (Insley 5, Connolly 27, Preston 39, Campana 63,66)
Chesham United Reserves 1 (Orchard 15)
Kings customary quick fire start saw both Alex Campana and Paul Insley miss chances in the first sixty seconds, but the latter made no mistake with five minutes on the clock as he latched on to a superb Lee Burgoyne through ball to score off the keeper. Chesham dug deep to stay in the game and were rewarded when their first major attack on fifteen minutes was rounded off by a right wing rocket from Will Orchard that gave Ant Ladyman no chance. The keeper had to be alert to tip over a header from a corner minutes later, but skipper Gary Connolly rounded off a classy move involving Campana and Insley to put the home side back in front. It was Connolly again who lit up the fortieth minute with a run that scythed through the defence before his shot hit the post. Undeterred, he seized on the rebound to bring a superb tip over from James Hopwood and from the resultant corner Craig Preston stabbed home a loose ball from close range. In the second half the cold, windy conditions were supplemented by rain, but both sides continued to try and play attractive, interpassing football with a distinct competitive edge. Kings quashed any hope of a Chesham comeback when Tom Carter caught out the defence with a quick throw in that allowed Alex Campana to be one on one with the keeper for a precision shot just inside the post. Lee Burgoyne, who was the subject of much physical attention, made another powerhouse run while under pressure and put Campana through to round the keeper, giving a final scoreline that was perhaps hard on United, but it was another impressive home performance that keeps the pressure on the top two.
