No. 20 23rd October 2012. Challenge Trophy – Round 2
Bedford 3 (Luke Ladyman 22 (og), William Sells 37, Tony Thorpe 65)
Kings Langley 3 (Sakho Bakare 14, 59, Jimmy Armstrong 81)
(Bedford win 5-4 on penalties, after extra time)
Kings started the League Cup encounter brightly and when Sakho Bakare picked up the ball wide left, his rasping shot was in the far corner of the net before keeper Wayne Simpson moved. But Bedford’s own left wing was looking dangerous and despite Kings trademark possession football, Bedford were back in it when Jonny Allen’s low cross was turned into his own net by Luke Ladyman. The visitors responded with a quality move that ended with a Bakare header just over and his through ball saw Craig Lynskey’s shot saved by the keeper’s legs. However, it was Bedford who scored next when a through ball eluded Jack Pattison, leaving Sells to run on and finish. Kings became increasingly sloppy in the second half and were relieved to get back in it when Jack Johnson fed Sakho Bakare and he produced another spectacular shot from an acute angle. That was undone within six minutes when Nathan Pooley and Callum Adebiyi should have dealt with a raking cross, but Tony Thorpe outwitted both to head home. Kings surged back with Tom Carter just failing to finish a flowing Jimmy Armstrong – Craig Lynskey move and with time running out, a diving Armstrong header from a Sam Warrell cross squared it again and extra time was played. The game became increasingly tetchy and Warrell was dismissed for a second yellow, but with no further score, it was Kings who blinked first in the shoot-out and Bedford went through 5-4 on penalties.
