No. 3 14th August 2012. F A Cup - Extra Preliminary Round - Replay
St. Margaretsbury 3 (Lee Roberts 10, Ricky Light 19 pen, Adam Lawton 46 )
Kings Langley 2 (Jimmy Armstrong 22, Tom Carter 83)
Gallant Kings Langley bowed out of the F A Cup with a battling performance at St Margaretsbury, but ultimately events of the opening twenty minutes gave them a mountain to climb. Lee Roberts had outstripped the defence on the right to put his side ahead and Davy Edmee went close, before Shaun Owens teed up Evan Connolly and his blistering drive was superbly saved by Matt Deamer. The keeper equalled that five minutes later, using his feet to keep out Sam Warrell’s goal-bound shot and when Anthony Anstead won a penalty in a tussle with Jack Johnson, Kings were on the ropes. But within three minutes they were back in the game as Evan Connolly’s through ball was expertly converted by Jimmy Armstrong. Shaun Owens closed the half with a forty yarder that Deamer tipped round the post, but the defining moment came fifty seconds into the second period as sub. Adam Lawton, with his first touch, hit a dipping volley past Ross Hampton when there had seemed little danger. With little to lose, Kings switched to 3-5-2 and threw everything at Bury and substitute Tom Carter performed his party piece again, firing a shot through a crowded box from a Jack Johnson pass with seven minutes to go. As the tension mounted, the card count rose and Tom Carter almost struck gold when his shot was inches wide in the last minute. But it was not to be and the relief of the home players and supporters at the final whistle showed how close Kings had come to causing a Cup upset. Line-up (4-2-3-1)
