Kings surrendered their proud unbeaten League home record of 20 matches stretching back to 28th January last year, with Southall, on the night, proving the best team seen down Gaywood Park for some while. They came with a competent defence, a midfield that contested everything and allowed Kings no time on the ball, and an interpassing attack that showed tremendous pace. For all that, Kings adapted their game to a longer ball tactic and created more than their share of the chances, Jack Johnson’s through ball to Jimmy Armstrong bringing a good save from Dominic Cassells and a snap shot from Adam Hallissey narrowly wide. Southall’s first real chance came on 35 minutes when the lively Myles Hippolyte beat the offside trap after midfield possession had been lost and slotted the visitors into the lead. Kings should have levelled minutes before the break when Adam Hallissey made space on the far post to meet Ben Long’s perfect cross but put his header past both keeper and post, as the home crowd were about to celebrate. Little changed in the second half, as Tyrell Bentley delivered the coup-de-grace with a calm lob over the exposed Ross Hampton and Kings fashioned the majority of chances that found Cassells excellently placed on every occasion, the epitome of which was a 20 yard volleyed rocket from Ben Long straight into the keepers arms. The home side forced a series of corners and Victor Baldav’s superb last ditch tackle denied Johnson when clear, while an Armstrong effort was ruled offside, but Southall took their chances and deserved their win.
