Faced with a schedule of playing three matches in four days, Kings made five changes for the long haul up to Buckingham and ground out a goal-less draw that was disappointing, but an improvement on the two previous League defeats. Apart from a fixture schedule that will see a minimum of three games a week until the end of the season, the other spin-off of this seemingly never ending winter is, understandably, the state of the pitches. To their credit, both teams tried to play interpassing football at a fast pace which meant that the encounter never descended to the realms of a bore draw, but too many moves broke down in the final quarter as the behaviour of the ball became unpredictable upon contact with the ground. Buckingham had the best chances of the game, Ross Hampton saving superbly from skipper Phil Martin just before halftime, and the keeper coming out to smother a lone run by substitute Luke Tavener in the second half. Kings, on the other hand, asked far more questions of the home defence but despite several desperate penalty area scrambles where the ball demonstrated an obstinacy to find the net, the best they had to show was a Ben Long shot over following a five man move and a Sam Warrell shot comfortably saved. Athletic seemed happy to settle for a share of the points as the encounter drew to a close, citing it as ‘a good result’, but Kings, electing not to make any substitutions with Saturday in mind, probed unsuccessfully to the end.
